Falkirk Council Collaboration: SO2 Air Quality Monitoring at Grangemouth Oil Refinery
In the British Made Awards 2021, manufacturer South Coast Science has won ‘Best Air Quality Instruments Manufacturer 2021’ and its Praxis/OPCube has been awarded ‘Best Gas & Particulate Matter Measurement Solution 2021’.
The Awards programme is dedicated to those manufacturing firms and businesses who have remained resilient while striving for innovation and outstanding quality in their products.
The company is delighted that it’s commitment to precision engineering, in the service of delivering an innovative and cost-effective product, has been recognised by the panel.
Innovation and outstanding quality for ambient air monitoring
David Johnson, Director of Sales, explains that the company’s focus on precision comes from its scientific beginnings. South Coast Science has spent the best part of five years developing products that solve challenges encountered by environmental scientists around the world. It has worked with the UN Environment Programme, universities around the world and with environmental consultants such as Ricardo PLC.
The team has remained committed to it’s goal of generating precise air quality data from a low-cost device. The applications for environmental science research were immediately obvious. Then, as the company developed its open approach along with a plug & play design, commercial applications have opened up.
Setting data quality (rather than commercial appeal) as the primary goal has required a commitment to field testing, which forms the backbone of the company’s product strategy. Through its collaboration with Ricardo PLC, the company has been presented with access to air quality reference instruments across the UK. This collocation exercise has made it possible to document (known as The Pearson squared correlation coefficient, or simply R²) how well South Coast Science products perform compared to the scientific gold standard of a reference instrument.
Field testing hasn’t only happened in the UK. Work with UNEP and other researchers has allowed South Coast Science to gather air quality training data from across the globe in environments as diverse as Fairbanks, Alaska and Uganda, Africa. Praxis units are currently in operation in all 7 continents across the globe.
“As Awards Coordinator for the inaugural British Made Awards 2021, I am delighted to award South Coast Science Best Air Quality Instruments Manufacturer 2021. I wish warmest congratulations to David and the entire hard-working team at South Coast on their continued success, and for their industry-leading air quality instruments used the world over.”
Emma Pridmore, British Made Awards Co-ordinator
“We have spent over three years working to improve sensor performance in our Praxis products with the vital support of our scientific and consultancy partners. It’s good to see the hard work is paying off in terms of independent validation through the MCERTS scheme and third-party recognition in the form of this award.”

In many ways, the development of the Praxis/Urban and Praxis/OPCube has been a long running R&D project, culminating in a robust product that is able to answer real-world challenges for researchers and commercial customers alike.
